Preserving the charming Sicilian style, this luxury property is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday
Located north of Siracusa and overlooking Mount Etna, Commenda of San Calogero is a former farming and hunting estate. The property is in a strategic position as it is close to various natural sites (Etna, Oasi di Vendicari), archaeological ruins (Siracusa) and architectural works of art (Ragusa, Modica).
The grounds of the property were once the only fertile place where citrus groves could grow. The property is perfect for a relaxing holiday, enjoying nature and beauty or organizing special events. The villa is surrounded by gardens, olive and citrus groves and fountains and many other magical spots waiting to be discovered. Bordered by the dry-stone walls typical of the Sicilian countryside, Commeda di San Calogero’s swimming pool is a peaceful oasis, complete with sun decks and a snack bar where on request, light lunches are served. The property enjoys a spa area where you can have a Turkish bath near the perfumed garden with its aromatic plants, in order to pamper all of your senses.
The villa has been renovated with many of the original rooms being totally redesigned: the storehouses have been transformed into a spacious dining room, library and lounge with fireplaces; what were farmers’ homes now host the guests. Everything has been designed following the ancient Sicilian style with vintage furniture and valuable antiques.
The spacious drawing room hosts an impressive fireplace surrounded by sofas. From here you can access the library where you will find books with the history of the villa and pictures of the original property. Nearby are the living area and the spacious dining room as well as the fully equipped kitchen. Though glass doors, you will find the well-tended Italian garden and the inviting Indian pavilion.
From the living room you can access the main courtyard from which some of the spacious bedrooms are accessed. Each room has an en-suite bathroom and independent entrance; however, there is the option of having interconnecting rooms. In the bedrooms, items typically found in Sicily’s country homes combine with exquisite pieces of period furniture and the latest in modern technology to create a tantalizing mix of old-world charm and contemporary comfort.
Opposite the main entrance is an English garden with two more bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a large leisure area with swimming pool (20 x 9 m), a spa with Turkish bath and sauna and a summer kitchen with barbecue and outdoor dining area.
There is much to keep you busy here: discovering nature trails, archaeological walks and tasting the produce of the farm (olive oil, orange blossom honey or citrus fruit jams) to name a few.

Location
Surrounded by acre upon acre of ancient olive groves and citrus orchards, and yet within minutes of the sea, Commenda di San Calogero lies at the heart of a quintessentially Sicilian landscape.
The towns of Augusta and Lentini and the Pantalica nature reserve lie within easy driving distance. Travelling north, in just over 30 minutes, you’ll reach the city of Catania – the same amount of time you’ll need to reach Siracusa, the Plemmirio marine area and the spectacular Vendicari nature oasis, all situated to the south of the hotel. The baroque cities of Ragusa, Noto and Modica are only a little further away.
Between May and June, don’t miss the yearly appointment with the classical performances in the Greek Theatre of Siracusa. Also of increasing popularity, along with the better known Taormina Film Festival in June, is the International Frontier Film Festival (July) in Marzamemi, an ancient fishing village that has now become one of the newest not-to-be-missed spots in the area, with the largest and southernmost open-air hall in Europe, positioned within the tonnara, a tuna-net maze dating to the period of the Arab domination of Sicily and still perfectly preserved.
Distances (approx.):
Siracusa – 30 minutes’ drive
Catania Airport – 30 minutes’ drive
