A restored 15th-century monastery that flawlessly blends history and art with modern luxury
Lopud 1483 is a beautifully restored 15th-century monastery in Croatia that has been transformed into luxury accommodation for up to 10 guests. Its spacious interiors, tranquil gardens, and stunning art collection make it ideal for relaxing getaways with loved ones, immersive spiritual and wellness retreats, or unforgettable events.
Perched on a secluded stretch of seafront on the picturesque island of Lopud, this luxury property offers an exclusive retreat, ensuring complete privacy and serenity. A charming pathway leads from the gardens to a secluded pebble bay, providing a serene and private swimming spot. Additionally, a gate from the monastery leads to a rocky sea platform, perfect for a range of water sports, from snorkelling to sea kayaking and paddle boarding.
The massive walls of the fortress offer fantastic acoustics, perfect for an evening of outdoor cinema or private concerts. On top of the fortress, a sunset roof terrace offers panoramic views of the sea, the surrounding islands, and the lush national park on Mljet. It’s the perfect space for sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water or enjoying quiet stargazing from the canopied day beds.
The grounds feature various garden areas for socialisation, relaxation and quiet contemplation. The Lower Garden boasts a traditional pergola walk, shady olive trees, and a sundeck ideal for al fresco dining. The Upper Garden stretches along the fortress walls. It is ensconced in aromatic herbs and native Mediterranean foliage, creating an ideal area for casual barbecues and relaxed picnics overlooking the surrounding islands. Finally, the Sacred Garden – inspired by the original apothecary garden – is designed for meditation and contemplation. Amongst its medicinal plants, flowers, and fruit trees, the garden merges the elements of art, architecture, spirituality and healing for a truly relaxing atmosphere.
At the heart of the monastery is the cloister, which has been completely restored yet retains its charm with original plaster, tiles and stone. Its central courtyard can be transformed into an idyllic al fresco dining area, perfect for memorable occasions.
Indoors, many of the property’s original features have been retained, even down to wall graffiti, which has been tastefully juxtaposed with modern art pieces. This unique blend of historic charm and contemporary comforts is sure to impress any culture or history buff.
The entrance – the Angel’s Hall – features two 18th-century baroque angels along with original wall inscriptions. The space can be used for welcome drinks or larger sit-down dinners. More intimate family meals can be held in the Old Kitchen, which has a fully functional bread oven and an open fireplace, and leads out to a peaceful little garden.
The monastery’s 13 original cells have been transformed into five spacious guest suites, each offering en-suite facilities and beautiful sea or garden views. These suites seamlessly blend modern comforts and contemporary art pieces with the monastery’s original features, creating unusual and intriguing living spaces.
With its peaceful location, rich history, and unique features, Lopud 1483 is the perfect setting for an unforgettable luxury holiday or memorable event in sunny Croatia.
