Located just off the east coast of Tanzania, the exclusive Thanda Island is one of the world’s most private and luxurious getaway locations. An 8-hectare marine reserve offers infinite opportunities for exploring nature, along with relaxation and entertainment.
The island took 10 years to develop with the owners focussing on eco-friendly processes to keep the natural environment as unspoilt as possible. The accommodation is comprised of a five-bedroom villa along with two rustic, two-bedroom Tanzanian bandas surrounded by lush vegetation, white sand beaches and clear, blue waters teeming with vibrant coral and tropical marine life.
On the island, guests can enjoy a host of outdoor activities. There is a stunning, glass-rimmed infinity swimming pool with Jacuzzi, a floodlit tennis court, a yoga sala, and table tennis and beach volleyball sets. By the beach is a boat house filled with water sports equipment from boogie boards and kayaks to jet skis and paddle boats. The surrounding waters are also perfect for snorkelling and diving, and fishing, and guests have their own private boatman for guided excursions.
Whether looking for a quiet space to enjoy a morning coffee or to socialise with friends and family, there’s a host of outdoor lounge and relaxation areas to enjoy. Days can be spent wiling away the hours on sun beds by the pool, relaxing on the terrace lounge, or enjoying a refreshing cocktail by the beach bar. During the evening, meals can be enjoyed al fresco on the terraces or beach, or even in a cosy Arabian Bedouin tent before everyone gathers around a crackling beach bonfire to catch up on events of the day.
The main villa boasts a spacious and bright open-plan living and dining area featuring a large ocean aquarium filled with tropical fish and coral, along with a Steinway grand piano, an impressive wine collection, and a cigar humidor. For quieter moments, the well-stocked library is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a holiday read. There are five king-size bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms with indoor showers and outdoor baths, along with direct beach access. Extra beds for children can be set up in these rooms.

On the other side of the island are the two bandas with one king-sized bedroom and one twin room each, all with sitting areas and en-suite bathrooms. About the area
Thanda Island is a heavenly oasis covering eight hectares; it is 350 metres wide and has circumference of 1.1 kilometres. The island is part of Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve and is surrounded by coral reefs, which shelter it from stormy waters.
Although secluded on a small private island, guests have a host of activities to keep them busy and entertained. From relaxed dining on the beach to more exhilarating water sports, everything has been created for guests’ ultimate indulgence.
Guests can enjoy boat cruises, sailing, paddle boarding, and kayaking, or for adventure seekers, diving and deep-sea fishing are perfect options. The Mafia Island Marine Park near Chloe Bay is a well-known diving and snorkelling spot, or for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, guests can swim with the whale sharks that congregate just south of Thanda Island between October and February each year.
A tailor-made Tanzanian adventure will allow guests to explore the spice fields of Zanzibar Island or Africa’s largest game reserve and World Heritage Site, Selous Game Park, both only an hour’s flight away.
To reach the island, guests can take a private helicopter flight from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, or a private charter flight to Mafia Island, from where a boat will continue the journey to the island.
